Our Story

The dream to plant True North Church in Milton, Ontario, began with a passion in the hearts of Pastors Alan and Sherri Wachob to help see Jesus’ Great Commission carried out in the nation of Canada and specifically in Toronto.  With only 5% of it's residents attending church, Alan saw how the Greater Toronto Area desperately needed more churches that focused on reaching their communities in a relevant way with the message of Jesus Christ.  Southern Ontario's cities and towns were growing at rapid rates but more churches needed to be planted in order to keep pace with the growth.

In 2005, Alan and Sherri Wachob had begun to explore what their next phase of ministry would be as they felt winds of change coming to their lives and ministries.  At this point, they had been serving faithfully as pastoral staff at Harvest Family Church in Mississauga for almost 15 years, but they sensed God had a new direction for them.  They had helped start and lead many of the ministries at Harvest, but now it was time to do something else, something different.  By early 2006, they both knew God was calling them to start a new church in the GTA, and they whole-heartedly committed to their new assignment.  God would use all they had learned from their years at Harvest, working with Sr. Pastor Earlby Coulter, to bring glory to God in a new city and region.  They knew what the GTA really needed was not simply pastors, but pastors who loved reaching lost and irreligious people.

When Alan approached Pastor Coulter about his plans to leave Harvest, he confirmed and encouraged Alan in this new phase of ministry.  Once it became evident that church planting was the direction God was leading Alan, Pastor Coulter suggested Harvest play a sponsor role, providing people, prayer, and finances to resource the new church.  Now that Alan was obeying God and stepping forward in faith, it became obvious that God was backing this dream.  The new church now had a purpose, a pastor, and a plan was developing quickly.  The plan God had for True North Church was starting to unfold.

When looking back on how God led him to stay in Canada, Alan says, “When God called me to pastor a church, I first assumed it would be back in the States where there were so many more opportunities to pastor existing churches, plus, that’s where I grew up.  But, after living here for over 15 years God helped me realize that I was now a ‘Canadian’ and I fit the region here better than anyplace else.  God wanted to use me here, and I wholeheartedly agreed”.

By late 2006, God clearly showed Alan in prayer that the growing city of Milton was to be the home of True North Church.  Alan and Sherri had spent time looking at different cities and regions all around the GTA, but they settled that Milton was the place for them!  This church plant would be a new Spirit-filled, Gospel-preaching church in “the western gateway to the GTA”.  It's purpose would be clear, “to give the residents of Milton and Halton Region the best opportunity to become fully developing followers of Jesus Christ”.

For 2 years, Alan and Sherri focused their attention on church planting through extensive study, preparation, and research but they knew a launch team was absolutely necessary to start the church they saw in their hearts.  God was faithful and supplied an amazing group of people who felt called to train, dream, pray and plant alongside them.  Together as a team, in the fall of 2007, they started 5 monthly preview services as the chruch ramped up toward a full scale launch.  On February 10, 2008, True North Church launched weekly Sunday services with a Grand Opening at the local high school, complete with fully staffed kid's classes for every age group.

Within weeks, the church was seeing people recieve Christ, begin a relationship with Him, and grow in the life-changing truth of God's Word.  17 people were baptized in it's first summer baptism service.  This was just the beginning of this God adventure.  When attending True North Church today, people encounter a contagious spirit of faith that reminds them that God still does impossible things -- for those who believe!

This is the story of True North to date.  Perhaps you will be a part of the rest of the story yet to unfold.  Why not come and find out?
